Bay Area News Group Sees Results with New Subscriber Services Website

The San Jose Mercury News and the Contra Costa Times, two newspapers operated by the Bay Area News Group, have launched a fully automated customer engagement and subscriber services website backed by an intelligent database called Subscriber Concierge. Developed and implemented by Marketing G2 (MG2), a customer retention and data integration company, Subscriber Concierge allows customers to manage all aspects of their subscription and enables newspapers to target promotions and communications based on customer variables.

Since the website's activation in February, the newspapers have seen over 30,000 customers register online and activate their accounts. These users now have the ability to schedule vacation holds, process credit card payments, sign up for recurring payments on EZ Pay, and contact customer service with delivery issues. Subscribers also have access to the paper's daily e-Edition and can view it on the Kindle, Nook, iPad or Sony Reader.

The website portal also plays an informational video when a subscriber first visits the site, demonstrating the ease and usability of the navigation, along with what features subscribers can use to manage their account. The video was produced by the direct marketing department at MG2 as part of its creative solutions for promoting e-Editions and has been a helpful tool in welcoming new users to Subscriber Concierge.

Supported by Open Intelligence, a marketing database that organizes complex data to make it easier for newspapers to manage customer relationships and marketing programs, Subscriber Concierge is developed with each individual newspaper's goals and circulation system capabilities in mind. Its programming is designed to support the service needs of the expanding landscape of content platforms. As newspapers deliver content to mobile, tablets and other digital platforms, Subscriber Concierge can handle authentication services and offer management and support tools to customer service representatives.

"The Bay Area News Group recognized the need to have a single customer engagement application across the enterprise that positions them to easily support paid subscribers on emerging content platforms," said Patrick Glennon, Marketing G2's founder. "Instead of having to develop and integrate with various operating systems to introduce new paid content platforms, they can now communicate solely with Subscriber Concierge."
